Bear Creek Lake Park, Lakewood, CO

This is an easy one for us since we live a whopping 20 minutes away.  Most people who are familiar with the C470 highway in the Southwest Denver Metro area know this park because it has a waterskiing mini lake that you can see right off the highway.  It is also just across the highway from the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater and the legendary (although shortly to become a housing tract) Bandimere Speedway.

The park itself is run by the City of Lakewood and actually does have a rather comprehensive online reservation system although rather archaic in design.  The phone customer service is stellar and they have been very helpful in helping me cancel reservations and turn them into credits to use in the future when the cancellation time has lapsed.  Surprisingly, I was even able to find those credits online and use them toward another stay without calling customer service again.

It is a rather large park but unfortunately the campground has a stellar view of the highway and the glowing orange beacon of Home Depot up on the hill above.  Most of the campsites are rather large although there are truly no sizable trees within the campground.  So no shade for the summer months.  The pads themselves are nice level gravel with a fire ring and large sturdy picnic table.  Most sites are back in but I know there are at least a few pull-through sites.  The campground has a pull through water fill up station but no water hook ups at the sites themselves.  Also has a dump station on the edge of the campground but no sewer hook ups at the sites.

The park is home to 3 lakes total. Little Soda Lake, for private water skiing only, Big Soda Lake which is famous for its sandy (gravelly) beach and great for paddle boarding and the further hidden and larger Bear Creek Lake.  Bear Creek Lake is open to motor boats 10 hp and less.  None of these lakes are really very large by most standards but they are nice enough to visit for hot summer days or seasonal bird watching.  Big and Little Sodas are also prone to Blue Green Algae plumes in late summer so swim at your own risk.

The campground is also adjacent to an archery range with about 8-10 hay bale targets and a stable to overnight your horses while camping.  They also have a fairly large newer playground right in the middle of the campground with a woodchip base.

This is a great local park to stay at when you are visiting the West Denver Metro area.  We tend to stay there for at least one weekend every year.  I have even been known to take the camper there on my own when I need a weekend away without being too far away.  I feel safe enough on my own and I am close enough to home in case anything should go wrong.
